be forewarned... the first half of the season takes a dramatic dip in quality. but the ending is really great. slim charles becomes more and more likeable.
i've been bit torrenting simon & burns' new mini-series generation kill. it's ok, kinda unpleasant. there's no likeable characters really. but the dude who plays ziggy in season two is in it, and he's a lot better in the new role.
if you burn through the wire and get bored, check out this show called mad men. it's on dvd. i just plowed my way through it. it's not wire good, but it's still well worth it, imo.
I've heard a bit about Generation Kill - interviews and stuff. Doesn't seem quite up my alley. Yeah, Ziggy needed a second chance, even if he isn't the same exact character.
And Mad Men has been reviewed like crazy since it was nominated for an Emmy (that's the t.v. award right?). The second season is supposed to be even better than the first. I'm going to Netflix the series.
The thing about likability and the Wire is that I like just about every character! Slim charles is great. Though if he were in a movie or another show I probably wouldn't think much of him. I think it's the shows ability to have the good and the bad cancelled out by each other (or switched) that gives everybody a chance in a neutral light. In other words, you really get to see that character as the person they are, instead of what their occupation is.
i think the only bad character on the wire is that girl that mc nulty dates who runs the carcetti campaign. the show is too smart for a stereotypical ice bitch character like that (even its scheming-jew-lawyer stereotype character is vaguely likeable). the newsroom folks in season five aren't really as good as the season four newbies. season four is absolutely the best thing i've ever seen on TV by a wide margin.
mad men isn't quite as good, but i've been searching for a new show like crazy, and it's easily the best i've found. some others i've tried lately: "californication" (bad), "the tudors" (REAL bad), "weeds" (second rate arrested development), "curb your enthusiasm" (awesome, but redundant sometimes) and "dexter" (ok, but the deep parts aren't deep enough). when i was house painting for my folks, i was watching a lot of cable, hahaha.
also, you might want to give "generation kill" a shot. it's definitely got that same power-structures-fuck-everything-up vibe that "the wire" has. and it's super realistic, almost too realistic, because it doesn't let you like anyone. but it's certainly worth consideration.
